Dave Swindells x YMC
YMC has linked up with legendary nightlife photographer Dave Swindells for a T-shirt capsule, competition and charity fundraiser. The collaboration celebrates Swindells’ book Ibiza ’89 , which was originally released by cult London publisher IDEA Books.
Images from Ibiza ’89 are displayed across three white YMC T-shirts. The various photographs show revellers on the White Isle during the so-called Second Summer of Love. The majority of the images included in the book – and shown in the YMC collaboration – were captured by Swindells over the course of a week-long assignment for 20/20 Magazine in 1989.
The summer of 1989 was the first time Swindells had visited Ibiza, and it represented a significant turning point for the island. After that summer, the largest clubs such as Ku and Amnesia were obliged to put roofs over their outdoor dance floors, which did change the appearance, if not the spirit of the parties. It also marked the beginning of the so-called British invasion of Ibiza, and thereafter generation after generation of British clubbers would visit the White Isle. As Swindells wrote in his intro to the book, “it was easy to believe that almost anything was possible in Ibiza in 1989.”
Originally limited to just 1,000 copies, Ibiza ’89 has become a collector’s item in the three years since it was first published. As well as releasing the trio of T-shirt designs, YMC is also running a free-to-enter competition to win one of five signed copies of the third edition of Ibiza ’89, which was published in May and has recently sold out at the publishers.
10% of all revenue from the collaboration will be donated to Cancer Research U.K. “I chose this charity as this disease has had such a profound impact on so many lives,” says Swindells, “including many people who have been and are very close to me.” Additionally, people will also be able to donate directly to the charity through the YMC website.
The five winners of the Ibiza ’89 competition will be announced on October 12th.
